I give gift cards because people’s wish lists are so freaking ridiculous I can only afford to partially fund their heart’s desires. People give me gift cards because I don’t like to travel with cash or carry stuff on the plane. Someday we’ll have Christmas at home like normal people.
I took an entire seminar on gift-giving this semester. Hundreds of pages on gift-giving. Political, relational, and definitely not freely altruistic.
